“A Good Man Goes to War” opens with River Song returning to her cell in the Stormcage. She claims to be returning from spending her birthday with the Doctor. That he took her to 1814 to the last of the frost fairs. However, River is not dressed for 1814. She is wearing a bustle dress from the the 1880’s.
This is obviously not an outfit purchased from some rack, but made for Alex Kingston.
It can be reproduced using the following materials and patterns. The hardest part of recreating this look is finding material with the proper color
and stripe pattern. It's is hard to tell from this picture but the fabric is a grey on grey stripe pattern. Any type of material with this pattern would work
but best results would come from either silk or taffeta.
Costume Breakdown
Underskirt - solid grey color with knife pleats at bottom (can be created using Truly Victorian pattern 221 "1878 Tie-back underskirt")
Overskirt - striped fabric with apron front and bustled back (can be created by modding Truly Victorian pattern 303 "1872 Side Drape Overskirt" to add the scallops at the bottom and a bustle panel in back)
Bodice - striped fabric with grey fur trim on lapels (can be created using Truly victorian pattern 429 "1880 Jacket Bodice")
Additional peices to complete outfit
Fur muff - many can be obtained from ebay but it is also easy to make one out of fake fur to match the trim on the dress
gloves - any gray gloves will do but they may also be modified to include the matching fake fur trim
scarf - a bonus to add a matching fur scarf
hat - any small gray hat will do. bonus to make one. Denise Nadine Designs has a pattern for one that is very similar. Pattern is called "Katie"
ice skates - a pair carried over your arm is the final touch
